2014-2015 NBA Playoffs Round 4

I have had the Warriors for a few rounds now, and am not changing. They were the best team all year, and nothing has substantially changed. Dubs in 5 over the Cavs. A sweep wouldn’t surprise me.

Honestly, I had to take a step back before making my prediction because I wanted to remove my biases. I have never liked Lebron, just not my style of superstar. The Cavs team is built terribly, and is going to sink itself this offseason by extending JR, Iman, and Thompson while Love runs away. They traded a career of Wiggins for an incomplete season of Love, which sounds insane. They run painful offensive sets and their defense, while much better in the playoffs to be fair, is not that good. Kyrie is a turnstile.

Meanwhile, I love these Warriors. Curry is what I made Steve Nash be in 2K for years: a freak shooter and passer who has 30 point/10 assist games with 7 3s. It just never happened in real life until Steph came into the league. Klay won me a fantasy title at the end of his rookie year (the Dubs were terrible and injured so they let a rookie SG just take as many shots as he wanted. It was fantastic for fantasy purposes). Barnes was one of my favorite college players. Bogut was a 2K mainstay in the early part of his career: I had sneaky Bucks’ wins when my opponents couldn’t name half the team (Redd and Mo Williams!). Iguodala was one of my favorite players of the last decade, still an underrated (if now overpaid) Swiss Army knife, leader, and awesome competitor. Barbosa can get a ring to represent all those Suns from the mid  to late 00’s that deserve one. However, I think my biases can be put aside for this prediction. Simply, the Warriors are so much better by any metric. They are a child of the D’Antoni Suns and 14-15 Spurs.

Honestly, I don’t think the Cavs are that good. I feel stronger about this one on paper than I did about the Spurs over the Cavs last season. They Xs and Os are more conclusive. There is a leadership factor to input because Lebron has been here and Golden State has not. However, Golden State isn’t exactly a young team. Green. Barnes, and Klay are still relatively green. However, Green and Barnes have been in the playoffs every year of their career. Steph is in year 6, Bogut and Lee have 10 years in the NBA at this point, and guys like Barbosa, Iguodala and Livingston have been around a long while. The Cavs, outside of Lebron and Perkins, really don’t have much more experience under pressure. If anything, they have less. Kyrie, Thompson, and Shumpert have few high leverage reps in their career.

Kerr has outcoached Blatt all year. Kerr gets the rookie coach title, but worked as a GM for so many years with a good team in Phoenix (and now has high class assistant coaches with him in Golden State) that his relative coaching age isn’t “rookie”. Blatt has been better in the playoffs than the regular season, but still makes stupid mistakes.

In terms of matchups, there are two glaring issues. The first is that there is nowhere to hide Kyrie. He can’t guard Steph, and Klay/Barnes would be a disaster in the post or while running around screens. No matter what you do, Kyrie is a sieve defensively. Take him out of the game because of his defensive liabilities, and then you don’t have to worry as much on the other end about defending the CLE PG spot.

The second issue is Lebron. No one can guard him, still. However, in the playoffs his jumper is broken and I don’t think a week is going to fix it. For the first time in a long time, Lebron is in part getting stats and impact through sheer numbers of possessions, not shot efficiency. Part of his allure was that he got 25 points on 15 shots. Now he is getting 30 on 25 shots. The 3s are not falling. So, the gameplan should be to find people who can slow him down and force him to take jumpers. Ignore the times he makes them and go forward. The Spurs did it with Leonard. Most teams have 1 or 0 guys who can make an attempt. Jimmy Butler did okay, and Carroll, before the injury, was again okay at it. The reason I love this matchup for the Warriors is that they have 4 guys who can do an acceptable job on Lebron.

Draymond Green is a great match for Lebron among all available defenders. Iguodala has always been a good option and is still viable. Harrison Barnes has the length and youth to be a really good third defensive option and one that Golden State doesn’t have to panic about when a switch happens. Klay Thompson isn’t the greatest option on Lebron, but he plays good hard defense using his length on opponents. He will have Kyrie I’d assume (consider how well Klay defends CP3 and Mike Conley), but like with Barnes the Warriors won’t panic if he gets switched on Lebron. Most teams would love to have Klay as the 4th option defensively on Lebron.

Generally, the Warriors can switch just about everything and that is a major key to their success defensively. Bogut guarded Tony Allen as the key adjustment in the second round for goodness’ sake. The Cavs always have to hide Kyrie, and bench Mozgov when something just doesn’t work with him. The Warriors may blitz with the Curry/Klay/Barnes/Iggy/Green lineup and I have no idea how the Cavs contain that unless they try Lebron at the 5 himself. The 3 point shooters Cleveland uses in James Jones and Mike Miller would get abused this series where they walked about unscathed in the Hawks’ series. Plus, you know, there is the Curry problem. If Lebron covers Curry that’d be most effective, but would have devastating impact in the rest of the matchups. Barnes, Green, and Iggy would kill whoever they got in the cross match.

The numbers suggest a very efficient series victory for Golden State. I think Golden State got its scare in the past series injury wise and in the previous series with their invincibility bubble popped. Cleveland has been overachieving for a while now, and taking advantage of a really easy Eastern Conference. Curry completes the incredibly hard (and statistically unlikely) task of being able to beat each of the other four All-NBA performers in 4 consecutive rounds.

NFL 2014 Week 18 Predictions: Wild Card Weekend

Week 18 Predictions: Wild Card Round
Panthers -6.5 over Cards, 24-13
-It’s all about Ryan Lindley. Sorry Cards: fix that QB situation and move Fitz somewhere else and this team will be primed for a run at the playoffs again next year. For now, Carolina has been playing well for a month now and it is time to stop ignoring that.

Ravens +3 over Steelers, 21-20
-It is going to be a rainy, messy night in Steel City. Without Bell (most likely), I will take the Ravens to show up in this divisional matchup. The Steelers have been undoubtedly better than Baltimore this year, especially in the last 6 weeks or so. But the weather combined with the injury situations make this a different case.

Colts -3 over Bengals, 30-23
-I will take Andrew Luck over Andy Dalton in playoff games in almost all cases. With the injuries in Cincy right now, this was an easy choice. AJ Green won’t be 100% if he plays, and Jeremy Hill can only do so much. The Colts are going to be an overwhelming force down the field and try to contain the Bengals’ running in a close win.

Lions +7.5 over Cowboys, 23-21
-I honesty have no idea who wins this. It will be close, so I am taking the extra half point. In general you take the better defense when it is close. Combined with such a high line, my decision is made. The Lions can give that Cowboy offensive line some issues unlike many other teams, and I have no idea who covers Tate and Megatron. The Cowboys defense is going to be exposed soon, perhaps it is this week.

Easiest Prediction of the week: The Superbowl Champion isn't playing this weekend, so most of this doesn't matter.

NFL 2014 Week 16 Predictions

Week 16 Predictions
Eagles -8.5 over Ethnic Slurs, 31-17
-I am not watching one second of this game. I think McCoy is a good daily league start though.

Chargers +3 over 49ers, 24-13
-He should go to Michigan, right?

Saints -6.5 over Falcons, 34-17
-The Falcons pass defense is abhorrent.

Chiefs +3.5 over Steelers, 20-17
-I don’t trust the Steelers. Or like them. Kansas City is going to have some offensive surprises for them. Heck, maybe even a WR will score!

Ravens -4 over Texans, 24-13
-Tom Savage? Thad Lewis? Case Keenum? Oi.

Packers -10 over Bucs, 41-17
-There is no end to how many points the Packers put up this week.

Lions -4.5 over Bears, 30-7
-Jimmy Clausen, meet Suh.

Panthers -3.5 over Browns, 22-10
-The Panthers need this and the Browns are probably already out of it.

Pats -10 over Jets, 28-10
-Probably an overall boring game, that is why I am projecting this to be so low.

Raiders +7.5 over Bills, 13-19
-Kyle Orton lays over a touchdown to NO team.

Colts +3.5 over Cowboys, 23-21
-Luck over a banged up Cowboys team on national TV GETTING over a FG? Yes please.

Seahawks -7.5 over Cards, 27-10
-Ryan Lindley everyone! Oh, I think he already threw an interception.

Broncos -3.5 over Bengals, 28-20
-Manning in prime time versus Dalton in prime time. I wish it were different, but I can’t ignore both clear histories here.

2014 MLB Season Preview

This is going to be quick and simple: I believe this is the year of the Ray.

They have been hanging around for about a half decade now. And they got close in 08-10, coming so short of a WS title. And while I think the model is well put together and should ensure sustained success over .500 over the next few of years, this is the “push the chips all in” moment. This is almost definitely David Price’s last year. Combine that maybe one more year of Zobrist’s prime and the ascension of Wil Myers/Matt Moore, and I think this is the breakthrough year.

Team Predictions:
AL East – Tampa Bay Rays
AL Central – Detroit Tigers
AL West – Oakland Athletics
AL Wild Cards – Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals

NL East – Washington Nationals
NL Central – St. Louis Cardinals
NL West – Los Angeles Dodgers
NL Wild Cards – Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinatti Reds

ALCS – Rays over Athletics
NLCS – Cardinals over Dodgers
World Series – Rays over Cardinals

I love the pitching of the Cardinals, and that is why I have them going so far here. But, overall the Rays to me are the best team with probably the best managing and tactics. I like Matt Moore and Chris Archer to develop into top of the rotation with a last stand by David Price roaring them to a title.

Individual Awards:
AL MVP: Evan Longoria (I’ve explained this one right? Offense is nice, but leadership and defense matters too). Runner up: Mike Trout
AL Cy Young: David Price. Runner Up: Yu Darvish
AL ROY: Jose Abreu (I love his power potential, especially with that team in Chicago). Runer Up: Xander Boegarts.

NL MVP: Joey Votto. Runner Up: Andrew McCutcheon
NL Cy Young: Adam Wainwright. Runner Up: Cliff Lee (Kershaw is on the DL, probably won’t matter that much but I’d rather take a fresh guy off the top).
NL ROY: Archie Bradley. Runner Up: Javier Baez

NFL 2013 Week 19 Predictions: Divisional Round

Saints +8 over Seahawks, 20-24
-Too many points, but a probable Seahawks victory. They did this dance last month, and this isn’t one of those games where the Saints learn from the first and do it differently. They just got dominated. And probably will be again, but have a slightly closer result. The rain keeps the scoring down a bit.

Colts +7.5 over Patriots, 24-31
-This is just way too many points. Trying to overcome my regional bias, I have a sneaking suspicion that the Colts win this game. But definitely, I am taking the 7.5. The Pats’ argument is constructed of the fact that they are 6-1 coming off the bye at home, and the only loss was to that wonky 2009 Jets team. The Colts will not be playing that style, and Belichick can scheme around even the Colts’ explosiveness. Though, Adam Vin is involved and that makes me really nervous.

49ers pk over Panthers, 16-13
-The 49ers were the original. The Panthers are a new fangled remix. Sometimes that’s good. But this is more of a Jordan-Kobe relationship. And while Kobe’s good, he ain’t Jordan. Kobe could get him sometimes in 1:1, but I think the Niners still get this one.

Chargers +10 over Broncos, 24-23
-I just…I don’t know…I want it to be…the time of possession stat….wind…Manning is under .500 in the playoffs….someone is getting upset this weekend….I don’t even know anymore.

NFL 2013 Week 18 Predictions: Wild Card Weekend

Colts -2.5 over Chiefs, 21-17
-The Colts are getting right at the correct time. FootballOutsiders has them at the lowest odds of winning the whole thing. While I get why the numbers support that, and that there is little chance of the Colts advancing past the title game round, I think this is a solid bet right now. The Colts have the Ravens ‘13/Packers ‘11 mojo of a strong start, dropping off toward the end of the year, young QB breaking into the elite, and looking good at the very end of the regular season. The Chiefs are going the wrong way, are getting out schemed, and have some injury concerns. In the playoffs, it often comes down to the team with the better QB so often, and the Colts are winning that battle.

Saints +2.5 over Eagles, 27-24
-I know, I know. The Saints aren’t any good outdoors/on the road. Well, we have no idea how these Eagles will be in the playoffs at all, and we know Brees and co. can win a Superbowl. Again, I am taking the better QB, this one in a little more of a shootout. If the Eagles get a lead though, this is actually probably over early because they will run it all over the Saints. But, I think Brees gets the Saints ahead and stays there.

Bengals -7 over Chargers, 33-23
-This is the game I feel most comfortable about. The Chargers are the second lowest projected FO Super Bowl team and that I can agree with. I picked the Bengals to make the Superbowl, and still feel okay about that despite the Hall and Adkins injuries. Green and Gio both go off in a big Cincy win. One year too early for the Chargers, who will draft heavily on defense and develop next year.

Packers +2.5 over Niners, 24-16
-This will be the third time in a 365 day span these two teams have played, a rarity for non division opponents. They know each other well, and are in very different spots than the first time. I think this is the matchup where the Packers flip the script. When they met last January, the Packers were the established offense and the Niners the upstarts who were newly developing an offense around a QB who only had a few starts. Now, the Niners have been rolling (successfully?) with their offense for a year plus, while the Packers were a pass team that became a run team with a different QB and now have gotten their All-Pro QB back for good. And if at any point, the Packers have learned how to stop Colin K and that rushing offense, now would be the time to implement it. Here is a thought: stop Davis and Boldin. They caught 20 of Kaep’s 21 TDs this year. That limited offense, with a think an almost worn out Frank Gore, gives the Packers the victory. And if Aaron Rodgers is allowed to get hot, watch out NFC.

As for the overall picture, the best prediction for the Superbowl is the boring one: Seattle over Denver. I really don't see anyone else besides maybe the Packers winning the NFC. The AFC is coming down to the Broncos, Pats, and maybe the Bengals. I like the Pats' chances, but the injuries are probably too much.

NFL 2013 Week 14 Predictions

Bills +3 over Bucs, 19-17
-Two bad teams with potential, so a FG seems right. That’s one road FG underdog I am taking this week….

Pats -11 over Browns, 30-16
-Who’s playing QB for the Browns? And at home too?

Lions +3.5 over Eagles, 27-24
-I truly believe the Lions are better. And odds are sooner or later Foles throws that first pick (that isn’t called back on a stupid penalty). This is the second time I am taking a FG underdog on the road.

Colts +6.5 over Bengals, 20-22
-Just too many points for an Andrew Luck team.

Chiefs -3 over Ethnic Slurs, 21-17
-As Bill Simmons pointed out in his Cousin Sal podcast, the Chiefs’ winning this week means that they clinch the 5 seed and can rest the remaining part of the regular season. Weird.

Dolphins +3.5 over Steelers, 21-20
-Third time here I am taking the FG over a home team, but in close games what choice do I have?

Ravens -7 over Vikings, 20-12
-Vikings should be ashamed of themselves, going 1-0-1 the last few weeks. They will start to lose soon, as they should.
-Strategic Eliminator Pick

Raiders +3 over Jets, 17-3
-Make that four times….

Broncos -11.5 over Titans, 31-14
-Don’t like it, but I am taking the layup.
-Best Eliminator Pick

Giants +3 over Chargers, 27-26
-Make that five times….

Seahawks +2.5 over Niners, 16-13
-Make that six times…..Seattle is just better

Rams +6 over Cards, 13-17
-Reports of Palmer possibly not playing are making me nervous.

NFL 2012 Week 19 Predictions: Divisional Round

And there goes my annual quest to go 11-0 in the playoffs. Some day, maybe.

The Divisional Round is always my favorite. We get to see 8 great, non pretender teams square off almost every year without fail. While the Conference Title Game weekend produces better matchups, there are only two games to watch. This weekend, we still get the full slate of four games. And occasionally in the Divisional round, we get to see some juggernaught tripped up by just a little too much rest and relaxation or even a false sense of security.

Week 19: Divisional Playoffs

Ravens +10.5 over Broncos, 22-28
-As much as I would love it, I just cannot predict the upset. Too much would have to go right for the Ravens and wrong for the Broncos. If Webb was healthy, that would make a huge difference. But, I do think that the Ravens put up a good fight and are able to keep it close. Ray Rice should be ready to go off after his miscues last week. Maybe the Broncos get rusty/lethargic/lulled into a false sense of security after their 10 game winning streak, but I just don’t think so. Von Miller could have a big day here, and I know Demaryius Thomas does.

Packers +3.5 over Niners, 31-22
-I know, I know, this result flipped the other way in week 1 of the regular season. Guess what? THAT WAS 19 WEEKS/5 MONTHS AGO. These are totally different teams. Randall Cobb has been unleashed, Cedric Benson/Alex Green/Jeff Saturday aren’t involved, and the Packers now know not to force the ball to Finley (well, kinda). The Niners are also a very different team, with a different quarterback, an emerged Michael Crabtree, and a concussed Vernon Davis. However, the biggest difference is the injured Justin Smith. He means so much to that team from a leadership standpoint and a schematic standpoint that his injury by itself makes me flip my prediction for this game. Ironically, the SF-NE game that I attended sold me that A. SF was the best team in the league and B. It immediately dropped from being that because of Justin Smith’s injury. He enables clean tackles for Patrick Willis and Bowman, and more importantly allows Aldon Smith to tee off on the quarterback through holds, stunts, and twists. Finally, Aaron Rodgers in the playoffs versus Colin K? Yeah, sign me up for about a 10 point Pack win.

Seahawks +3 over Falcons, 24-18
-By the way, the Falcons get to 18 by a touchdown, 3 field goals, and 1 safety. It seems right that they would get a safety, since that is all they got last year in the playoffs. I don’t believe in the Falcons in the post season. Not one bit. There is a limited but significant track record at this point saying that they are not an elite level team. The truth is, even if they had gone 3-5 in the playoffs under Matt Ryan so far instead of being winless, I’d still pick Seattle. Their team is just set up so well to win. Atlanta can really only throw the ball at an elite level. And Seattle is perhaps the only team that can take both Roddy and Julio out with their elite corners. Lynch is going to eat that defense up. Seattle wins outright, and while it won’t be Alabama – Notre Dame, I think the ‘Hawks show clear physical dominance over the Falcons.

Pats -9.5 over Texans, 34-17
-I watched that Bengals-Texans game and cheered. Not because the Texans won, no; I wanted the Bengals to win. But I cheered because the Texans won having 7 sustained drives but scored only 1 touchdown and 4 field goals. They do anything similar versus NE, show any of that pathetic level of aggression, and they will lose badly to the Pats in Foxboro. Second, we just saw this game a month ago, same place, same teams. The Pats won easily, and while they had some weird fluke good luck plays, those are counteracted by the fact that they will now get Gronk back. Third, Tom Brady in the playoffs, 16-6 all time. With one more win, he passes Montana for most all time. They aren’t losing this game.

NFL 2012 Week 16 Predictions

Almost to the end. At least several teams showed us their true colors last week, in the form of total roll overs and give ups (I’m looking at you, Jags, Chiefs, Bucs, and Lions). Good on Arizona and Oakland for kind of trying. I would include the Ravens in the list of four teams above but they were actually trying so that’s scary.

Power Tiers:

Super Bowl Probables: Green Bay and Denver. Just the most likely combination to make it right now, both are coming together well.

Championship Level: San Francisco and New England. Both showed quality last week. Both also showed enormous flaws.

In Contention: Atlanta and Houston. The “hey guy, we are here too!” tier. They lose to good teams, and beat up on bad ones. Guess what happens when they would play the four teams above them in this column in January?

Wild Card: New York Giants. I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t like them, I just won’t be turning my back on them ever.

Falcons -3.5 over Lions, 34-17
-Oh YEAH. Lions have packed it in. Coach getting fired number 1.

Dolphins -4 over Bills, 17-12
-One team is trying, one isn’t. Coach getting fired number 2.

Bengals +3.5 over Steelers, 21-20
-Simmons said the Steelers are aggressively mediocre. Sounds about right. Bengals are better than people gave them credit for.

Colts -7 over Chiefs, 20-6
-I’d be insulted with a 7 point line if I were the Colts. Coach getting fired number 3.

Vikings +9.5 over Texans, 24-27
-Peterson.

Saints +1.5 over Cowboys, 29-27
-Cmon everyone. This is what the Cowboys do. They get us all excited, we are all looking forward to the matchup for the Cowboys next week versus Washington, and then they lose the preceding game. Brees is going to throw it 60 times no matter what. This clearly has to happen.

Patriots -14.5 over Jags, 41-14
-Pats angry. Chad Henne. Coach being fired number 4.

Panthers -9.5 over Raiders, 24-10
-Panthers trying to save Rivera’s job? I don’t know if that will work but they will blow out the hapless Raiders here. So, coach being fired number 5 and 6.

Chargers +3.5 over Jets, 14-12
-Chargers are being given 3.5, and that is the only reason I am taking this sorry excuse for a matchup. Coach being fired number 7 and 8.

Rams +3.5 over Bucs, 24-23
-I think the Bucs have given up. And I am starting Sam Bradford in a title game this week. So, just hoping really?

In all seriousness, full respect to what Fisher has done with this Rams team. It just feels different, they are respectable. I was the first to harp on how he underachieved with the Rams (as many seasons out of the playoffs than in, record near .500 lifetime), but being competitive each week and trying is worth a lot. Respect.

Packers -12.5 over Titans, 31-10
-I know the Packers haven’t blown anyone out, but it is coming, the Titans are not good (they should have killed the Jets), and now the Packers really need it. Jeff Saturday is being benched. Nice guy, but I think it was time and that will improve the pass protection for the Pack.

Browns +13.5 over Broncos, 24-27
-Something doesn’t feel right here. I don’t think the Broncos get tripped up, but they may be looking at the final two games at home as gimmes. I think the Chiefs game is, but the Browns are a tough team and this could be closer than it appears. Feels a little like Chiefs over the Packers in week 15 last year. And sadly, coach being fired number 9.

Bears -5.5 over Cards, 21-10
-Neither team is right, but the Cards are done. So, probably, is Coach Wiz. Coach being fired number 10.

Giants -1 over Ravens, 20-16
-The Trainwreck bowl, at least right now. I’ll take the NASCAR package over the unblinking Jim Caldwell.

Seahawks PK over Niners, 20-17
-Simply due to how hot the Seahawks are right now and the fact that SF had to travel on shorter rest than usual.  A great game, however, and hopefully terrible for their running backs for my fantasy purposes.

NFL 2012 Week 15 Predictions

Okay, not a good week by me. I got a lot of the basics right, but the lines were all off for some reason. I am hoping with many playoff pictures clearing up, I will be able to hit a better percentage this week.

By the way, I am staying away from NYJ-TEN this week, mainly because I have no idea how that is going to go. However, the best part of that game is that because it is the MNF game, we all will know how our fantasy matchups ended up because NO ONE SHOULD BE PLAYING ANYONE FROM THAT GAME IN A SERIOUS MATCH.

Bengals -4.5 over Eagles, 28-22
-One team needs it. One team is not only out but got its “crap we can’t go into the offseason on a 12 game losing streak so let’s just win ONE of these games” game out of the way. I am going to totally ignore this logic with Arizona later.

Ravens +3.5 over Broncos, 23-24
-Broncos are hot right now but these Ravens are still tough. Ravens could do the Pats a favor and pull the Broncos out of the 2-seed conversation, but I think it is more likely only a cover.

Packers -3 over Bears, 27-20
-My team is just going the WRONG way. Marshall continues his streak and has a big game here though.

Colts +9.5 over Texans, 24-30
-If this were in Indy, I’d pick the upset. The timing is just right. But it is in Houston, so the cover is the deal here. 9.5 points GIVEN to a 9-4 team. Um, disrespect much? You know what? Screw it. Colts +9.5 over Texans, 24-23. I’m going for it.

Jags +7.5 over Fins, 14-20
-The Dolphins lay 7.5 to no team.

Vikings +2.5 over Rams, 21-20
-One team has one dynamic player. There’s your difference.

Giants +1.5 over Falcons, 31-13
-Remember the playoffs? The Giants do, but I am pretty sure all the Falcons have spent some time trying to repress that memory.

Saints -3.5 over Bucs, 30-26
-A lot of points, Bucs are now falling off so the Saints win.

Browns +2.5 over Ethnic Slurs, 22-20
-Assuming RG3 doesn’t play or plays rusty and slow. Browns are better than you think, and the Dog Pound should get up for this one. This is a nice young team learning how to win. Of course, you could say the same about Washington, but their rookie is injured.

Panthers +3.5 over Chargers, 21-20
-Cam is hot, and the Chargers still have Norv Turner.

Lions -6 over Cards, 31-3
-Cards are just bad. Brian Hoyer, fresh off the waiver wire, is clearly their best option at QB. Ugh.

Seahawks -5.5 over Bills, 24-13
-Bills weren’t good then lost a top three player on their team and their starting center. Seahawks D might be the most common “player” on championship teams this year.

Raiders -3 over Chiefs, 17-11
-Because at least the Raiders can score. Somewhat.

Cowboys +2 over Steelers, 20-19
-Because the Steelers still aren’t completely healthy and the Cowboys are inherently unpredictable.

Patriots -5 over 49ers, 30-20
-It would be hard to predict NE to beat two tough opponents in a row, but the games are at home, the Pats don’t lose there or in December, and they are clicking like crazy right now. Pats’ DVOA is somewhat ridiculous. Two quick points: 1. Brady took the three extra days after Thanksgiving to break down SF then since he knew he would need the extra time to study them. 2. The Pats, assuming Gronk is back and healthy for the playoffs, will have Lloyd Welker Gronk and Hernandez together for the 1st time since Week 1. This could be the third highest scoring team EVER and have its best players healthy only once or twice all season long.

NFL 2012 Week 13 Predictions

Ground out a nice 9-6 last week, time to focus on the stretch run. A lot of 4-6 point lines this week, some curious ones too.

Cardinals +4.5 over Jets, 21-10
-Jets are terrible. Cardinals are still a plus defense against the pass. 4.5 points?  Sure, sign me up. Let’s just ignore that the Cards don’t have an offensive line.

Panthers -3 over Chiefs, 27-14
-Ugh, Panthers aren’t good but this Chief team will be too busy asking for Cam’s autograph to win. Rivera>Crennel, um, I think?

Texans -6 over Titans, 31-10
-6 points? 6 points? I don’t understand. Titans fire their offensive coordinator and Jake Locker is still involved.
-Best eliminator pick

Colts +5.5 over Lions, 24-23
-Don’t bet against Chuck or Luck. New rules to live by. Lions have “on the edge of quitting” potential. At least the wide receivers will probably line up in the right places this week.

Jags +5.5 over Bills, 24-20
-I picked up Chad Henne in a long term keeper league today. I’m starting him in a major playoff matchup. I don’t even know what else to say about myself. In my defense, my other option was Phil Rivers.

Packers -9.5 over Vikings, 34-21
-Packers make some key adjustments for the offensive line and do just fine. Vikings are a nice team, but this is the part of the season where teams in it that need to win put the foot down.

Patriots -9 over Dolphins, 34-14
-Pats blowout the rookie quarterback. They’ve scored 10 points shy of 200 over the last 4 games. Have fun everyone.
-Second best eliminator pick

Bears -3 over Seahawks, 21-13
-Those corners will be missed when Brandon Marshall goes off for 9-120-2. Bears roll over the Seahawks, who are untrustable right now.

Rams +8.5 over Niners, 20-21
-Tough divisional game between two plus defenses. 8.5 is just too much. Upset would not surprise me here.

Bucs +8.5 over Broncos, 27-24
-WAY too many points. Bucs are playing well here, and the Broncos will slip up at some point.

Bengals -1 over Chargers, 28-12
-Norv. All about Norv. Bengals are playing really well anyways.

Browns -1.5 over Raiders, 24-20
-Browns are simply a much better team. Tougher, stronger, and more talented. Cry Oakland, cry: Cleveland is better than you.

Ravens -3 over Steelers, 27-6
-With Batch in, any number of turnovers is possible.  And the Ravens will turn those turnovers into more points than Cleveland did.

Cowboys -9.5 over Eagles, 28-9
-No faith in the Cowboys but this Eagles team is DONE. Turn them over. Fire Reid now. Please.

Giants -9.5 over Ethnic Slurs, 31-20
-Washington is feisty, but these are the defending champs. Please, Giants roll. By the way, RGIII is great, but Luck is the rookie of the year. Records people, look at the records.

Good luck for everyone starting their fantasy playoffs/trying to get in on the last week.

2012-2013 NBA Season Predictions: MB vs VP

2012-2013 NBA Season Predictions:
MB vs VP

MB - As per usual, another NBA season brings another set of season predictions and another contest with the VP himself, Vishal Patel. I will stipulate a new rule this year for our predictions. We cannot pick the winners from last year or truly obvious candidates. With that understanding, the winner between us will go to the person who picks the closest possible person. So we cannot pick Lebron for MVP, but if VP picks Amare and I pick Dirk for MVP, whichever finishes with the most MVP points wins that prediction.

AWARD SEASON
MVP:
MB - Since Lebron and Durant are ineligible due to my statement from above, I am going with Rajon Rondo. I think this year provides his best opportunity to rise to this level. His age makes sense, they are far enough from Pierce and Garnett being elite that the team success can be more placed on what Rondo contributes, and I think this will be a good regular season team which is the foundation for the award. Rondo has a good formula: he is going to play 40 minutes and a team of spot up shooters that goes 9 deep will play around him in 28 minutes spurts. And he is rocking in my 2K franchise right now. Solid scientific evidence right there. 13.5-5-13.5 with almost 3 steals and 50% shooting on a 55 win team wins this award for the Frog.

VP - I think Bliss’s rooting interests are clouding his judgement here, although it’s hard to argue with that 2K statline. I think Chris Paul is the pick to make here (he didn’t even earn half the number of MVP points that Durant got last year, so I’m using a loophole in MB’s rules and calling this a not-obvious pick). I am rolling the dice on his health holding out for an entire season, but given the fact that the Clippers loaded up their rotation with the likes of Odom, Crawford, and Grant Hill (which alleviates the scoring burden on Blake Griffin and elevates Paul’s stock as the central piece of Lob City), it’s a safe bet to say that CP3’s control of the game and leadership will impress a lot of MVP voters.

DPOY:
MB - With Dwight and Tyson ineligible, I am going to go with Andre Iguodala. It is rare for a wing to win this award, but I think the script could be right for Iggy. He has two opportunities here. First, now he gets to guard Durant, Kobe, Rudy Gay, etc on a more regular basis. It will show off his abilities. He also gets the chance to raise the team’s defensive ranking significantly because Denver wasn’t particularly good in that area last year. That rise might not all his doing, but one can still use that argument at the end of the year for him to win.

VP - I’m going to take the easy way out here and say LeBron James. He’s always guarding the best player on the other team, he’s already known for his stupendous defense, and with added time in the post now, his rebounding numbers, along with his steals and blocks, could actually jump this year.

6th Man:
MB - I am thinking of Chris Kaman. I am actually only slightly sure he’ll qualify. I think Dirk and Brand start once Dirk gets back but Kaman gets plenty of run. He will accumulate stats during the brief time when starting, then be the prime backup afterwards. If he doesn’t end up eligible, I will go with Wilson Chandler.

VP - Thaddeus Young is going to fill in the scoring void left by Lou Williams in Philly, and he’s going to be a great complement to Bynum and will definitely be on the floor at the end of games to offer the 76ers some mobility on defense to make up for Bynum’s “lapses” on that end of the floor. However, Doug Collins might move away from the idea of starting two 7-footers in Hawes and Bynum in today’s faster-paced NBA, so if Young ends up being ineligible, I think Antawn Jamison will snag a second trophy (second 6th man trophy? Or second trophy this year? Keep reading to find out...).

ROY:
MB - Anthony Davis is out based on my ridiculous criteria (which I am already hating myself for), so I am going to go with Damian Lillard for Portland, based solely on opportunity.

VP - I agree with Bliss, Damian Lillard will get all the minutes he can handle in Portland and is the only rookie even remotely close to challenging Davis for ROY.

Stat Time
Scoring (Alpha Dog):
MB - Durant obviously, but I will go with Carmelo Anthony as my pick.  I don’t particularly like Melo or the Knicks this year, but the situation sets up for him to shoot a LOT. That leads to points at least some of the time. Plus, he gets a post Olympic boost.

VP - With Durant, LeBron, and Kobe off the board here, Kevin Love is my pick to challenge for the scoring title. With talented passers like Ricky Rubio, AK-47, Brandon Roy, and Cool Hand Luke (Ridnour) around him, Love is poised to continue his high level of play from last season.

Rebounding (Mister Clean):
MB - Kenneth Faried. I had Humphries here, but decided to go with Faried because: A. He is the Manimal. B. He had a ton of boards when they let him play big minutes last year, C. He will get more minutes this year, and D. Denver will play a little better defense, creating more misses.

VP - I’m really starting to hate Mike’s rules now. Okay, DeMarcus Cousins gets my vote here; he’s talented, in shape, a beast on the defensive glass, and - based on the number of gunners on his team - will have plenty of opportunities to clean up on the offensive end as well.

Assists (Giving Tree):
MB - With CP3, Rondo, and DWill ineligible, I am going to go with Ricky Rubio. This will have to be on per game averages, but he will know the team better and have some better shooters to get easy 3 assists.

VP - Ricky Rubio will probably have the best chance of breaking up the reigning group of favorites. Not only has he gotten a rookie year under his belt, his team has upgraded at the wings, and Rubio should be able to flirt with double-digit assists this year.

Steals (Robber Baron):
MB - Iguodala. The high speed games they will play will lead to a ton of fast steals for Iggy Pop. Probably Rondo though.

VP - Rondo, Paul, and Rubio are the clear favorites. I hate myself for making this pick, but LeBron James will utilize his speed and defensive acumen in his increased playing time at PF to take advantage of opposing bigs and pick their pockets.

Blocks (The David Stern):
MB - Javale McGee. Same argument I used for Iggy and Steals. But really Dwight Howard, obviously.

VP - Barring the obvious picks of Ibaka Flocka and Dwight, I’ll go with the Clippers’ only rim-protector, DeAndre Jordan.

Title Town
Eastern Conference:
MB - HEAT, Celtics, Nets, Pacers, Hawks, Bulls, Raptors, Cavs.
You know the stories on the HEAT, Celtics, and Pacers. The Nets have more talent, health, and better expectations than before. The Hawks and 76ers all made moves that opened something up. The Hawks more than replaced Joe Johnson, and his absence leaves a simpler offense and more touches for Horford, Smith, and Teague. The 76ers may not get much out of Bynum and Iggy’s loss will be felt. Doug Collins may also wear everyone out before long. Thus, I am leaving the Sixers out. The Bulls have enough to keep afloat and get a low seed after Rose comes back. The Raptors I put in over the Knicks. I think due to age and injury the Knicks will fall apart. I like Lowry and LOVE Valanciunas. Kyrie Irving singlehandledly makes a jump into the top 15 players in the league and despite some errors in drafting other than him the last two years, the Cavs are propelled by him to a first round swept by Lebron and the HEAT. Oh, the irony.

VP - Heat, Nets, Celtics, Pacers, Hawks, 76ers, Bulls, Knicks.
Miami’s the easiest pick in the world (let the jinxing begin!), Boston reloaded in the offseason and is looking fantastic, the Nets are the new knock-off version of the Heat, and Indy is still young and constantly improving. The latter half of the conference is harder to predict, but I think Bynum will flourish as the #1 option in Collins’ team, and the Hawks are looking much more exciting with Josh Smith and Horford as the clear (and very complementary) leaders of this team. I think the Knicks will manage to hang on despite injuries to cling to one of the last two spots, and Chicago will be steady enough with the return of Captain Kirk to guide them into the playoffs even without their MVP. The only other team I see challenging for a playoff seed is Cleveland, but as amazing as Kyrie Irving is, he still needs a little more talent than what he has around him to make the postseason, especially in a full 82-game season. One final note: even if they won’t make the playoffs, the Bucks will be extremely entertaining to watch with Jennings and Monta as their backcourt.

Western Conference:
MB - Thunder, Lakers, Nuggets, Spurs, Grizzlies, Mavs, Clippers, Jazz
I would have loved to take the Warriors, but Curry is hurt AGAIN. He is such a big part of their success. Thunder, Lakers, Spurs, Grizzlies, Clippers are obvious. Nuggets got better with Iggy intangible and talent wise. They will miss some shooting with Afflalo but overall Iggy adds a lot more. Mavs reloaded and will be fine. Kidd had really slipped so that isn’t a significant loss. I left off the Wolves only due to the injuries. If they go 4-12 when Love is gone that’ll just be too big a hole. Next year Wolves. Jazz get development from Gordon Hayward and I like the new, slimmer Enes Kanter to be decent.

VP - Thunder, Lakers, Spurs, Clippers, Nuggets, Grizzlies, Mavs, Timberwolves
I don’t need to explain the top 4, so let me just say that Denver will not earn home court due to their lack of depth in the frontcourt. Memphis may end up shipping Zach Randolph, but even that possibility won’t be enough to stop Rudy Gay and co. from completing their march to the postseason. The Mavs have enough experience and an added injection of youth into their backcourt to continue their impressive streak of playoff appearances, and my surprise pick of the year is Minnesota, who I think are poised to make a lot of noise in the Western Conference after their offseason additions (and the growth of Love and Rubio). Utah will stagnate and trade one of their bigs midseason, and Golden State will sadly need another year or two of retooling despite a ludicrous amount of talent (just like Sacramento).

Final Four:
MB - Celtics over HEAT in the ECF due to injuries to Wade and Garnett owning Bosh. The Wade thing is going to happen at some point. Staying on my Rondo theme. Thunder over Lakers in the WCF. I’m afraid age will catch up to some combo of Nash/Pau/Jamison and that is an old team. Thunder quietly repeat as Western Champions because guess what? They got better and have the hunger from losing. Thunder over Celtics in the Finals, because who the heck covers Durant?

*Already have to make an edit to this. At 11:27pm on Oct 27th, we found out James Harden was traded to the Rockers for Jeremy Lamb and Kevin Martin. I have to update my picks. OKC wasn't more talented than the Lakers: they had experience together and cohesion. Now they don't. Nice job punting a title for money. Now I remember you Clay Bennett. Seattle is nodding knowingly right now. Lakers over Thunder in WCF, Lakers over Celtics in the Finals.

VP - Heat over Celtics in the ECF. Sorry Bliss, but Miami has too many weapons and age is just as big an issue for Boston’s core (minus the amazing Rondo of course). And I don’t care if I sound biased, but Steve Nash will not lose his chance to earn a ring, and so I say Lakers over Thunder in the WCF. David Stern will finally have his Kobe vs. LeBron final, suspiciously right before he retires in the middle of next season. Lakers over Heat in the Finals because the LAL raised Miami’s three All-Stars with four, and the Heat will (hopefully) fold.

Okay everyone. Stay tuned for our redraft monster column coming out Monday. Enjoy football tomorrow.
