NFL 2014 Week 2 Predictions

Week 2 Predictions
Lions +3 over Panthers, 23-19
-Derek Anderson was smoke and mirrors, and the Lions are good enough to at least get this close. I still don’t trust the Panthers to be able score at a level to keep up in this one.

Fins -1 over Bills, 21-17
-I wouldn’t put much stock in this one because the energy should be good at home with all their good news. But it is EJ Manuel against my boy Tannehill, and we know how I am picking that.

Jags +5 over Ethnic Slurs, 16-17
-Ugh, what a *fantastic* game to watch. The Jags are feisty and at one point RG3 was averaging 4 yards a pass last week. I’ll give the points a go.

Titans -3.5 over Cowboys, 27-17
-The Cowboys actively do not want to win.

Cards -3 over Giants, 21-14
-The Giants are bad. The Cards are scrappy. And Fitz will have more than 22 yards.

Saints -7 over Browns, 34-13
-Saints aren’t losing two in a row and the Browns used up all their tricks last week. We also know the Steelers aren’t that good now, so the Saints are a strong play.

Pats -3 over the Viks, 27-10
-With no Peterson, this should be a walk.

Falcons +5 over Bengals, 28-31
-With no Geno, I am taking the points in a shootout

Seahawks -6 over Chargers, 31-17
-10 days rest? Same time zone? Yes please.

Raiders +4.5 over Texans, 20-21
-I’ll take my boy Derek Carr at home as a dog versus Ryan Fitzpatrick on the road.

Packers -8 over Jets, 35-9
-This is delicious. Even better than Seahawks/Chargers. No way Packers go 0-2.

Chiefs +13 over Broncos, 24-33
-Wow crazy crazy. That’s a lot of points. I mean, the Broncos are going to win, but….13 points!

Colts -3 over the Eagles, 28-24
-No way Andrew Luck is going 0-2. The Eagles can’t start slow again and expect to win. I think we also see a lot of Ahmad Bradshaw over Trent Richardson, which is good for the offense and team.

I am not touching the Rams/Bucs game because I think both teams are terrible. And Bears/49ers depends if those receivers play or not.

2013-2014 NBA Season Predictions

I am really excited for the NBA season.

Don’t get me wrong, I am pretty much always into basketball. I love fantasy hoops: I consider it the best fantasy sport because it is longer than football, but retains the stat focus of baseball without being so insufferably long. Basketball itself is the most personal of sports, easily accessible to the common folk, affordable to go to in person, and decently good with advanced stats. So I love it very much.

But what is surprising is that I am even thinking about it on October 25th. Normally even though I love basketball, pro football is keeping me occupied. Even though I am not the biggest fan of college football, I probably have watched more of that in November the last few years than hoops. I don’t get into hoops fully until the turn of the new year (those Christmas games are my turnover point). But for this season I am locked in already, and cannot wait until tip off. I have drafts on Monday and am pumped. So, let’s do some predictions!

Western Conference Playoff Prediction:
1. Spurs over 8. Wolves
2. Thunder over 7. Mavs
6. Grizz over 3. Clippers
4. Dubs over 5. Rockets

1. Spurs over 4. Dubs
2. Thunder over 6. Grizz

1. Spurs over 2. Thunder, -Leonard makes the LEAP and shuts down Durant.

Easter Conference Playoff Prediction:
1. Bulls over 8. Pistons
2. HEAT over 7. Wizards
3. Pacers over 6. Cavs
4. Nets over 5. Knicks

1. Bulls over 4. Nets
3. Pacers over 2. HEAT

3. Pacers over 1. Bulls, -If Thibs manages his minutes, he can win this. So the Pacers win.

NBA Finals: Spurs over Pacers in 5
-Leonard dominates, limiting Paul George. Parker will be awesome as well, Duncan only has to play Hibbert to a stalemate. The Spurs benefit from the new Finals format (Finally a 2-2-1-1-1). Duncan and probably Pop walk off into the sunset. Ginobili limps off. Pacers are disappointed, but will be viable for the next half decade as it is clear Paul George is a dominant player.

All NBA Teams:
1. CP3, Harden, Lebron, Durant, Dwight
2. Parker, Rose, Paul George, Love, Marc Gasol
3. Rubio, Curry, Melo, Blake, Dirk
D. Avery Bradley, Tony Allen, Paul George, Lebron, Ibaka
R. Oladipo, McLemore, Anthony Bennett, Zeller, Olynyk

20 Proclamations and Predictions:
1. Bulls will lead the league in wins, just slightly over the Spurs. And everyone will marvel at the two of them doing so. The HEAT are declining, and the Thunder won’t be at full strength for a while, so this was actually easy. The Bulls continue to grind out wins, costing them health in the playoffs.

2. The Pacers’ bench makes the difference in the Eastern Finals, as the big difference from what happened last year. The math on the previous round versus the HEAT was pretty easily actually: Wade/Allen are declining, and Shane Battier probably goes off a cliff. Paul George got better, and they get contributions from Granger and Luis Scola when they didn’t before. So, go Pacers, go!

3. Pau Gasol has a really efficient and productive year, finally in an offensive system with him at center than features his ability to pass, be creative near the rim, and hit longer jumpers. Just no 3s Pau, please.

4. Kevin Love leads the league in boards, and has over 4 offensive rebounds a game. Rubio leads it in assists, as a combination of minutes/opportunities/game flow. Heck, he’ll lead it in steals as well (that’s not as out there, look at the numbers).

5. Wade finally regresses to a point where we cannot ignore it and Bosh is CLEARLY their second best player, without argument.

6. Victor Oladipo or Kelly Olynyk wins the Rookie of the Year. Probably VO, but Olynyk could have one weird statline.

7. The Lakers hit a ton of threes. Not only do they now have time with D’Antoni and Nash to run this thing, but ANYONE shooting over Metta is better, so Nick Young and Xavier Henry fill it up, even if it isn’t crazy efficient. Oh, but the Lakers divebomb and win 30 games because their defensive finishes dead last. You heard me. Nash/Kobe on one leg/Nick Young/person X at PF/old Pau. Holy crap are people going to score on them.

8. The Nets look good but not elite all year, and never really turn it on in the playoffs. However, it is injuries not to “injury prone” Brook Lopez or “old” Pierce and Garnett that do them in, but Deron Williams.

9. Dirk has a career capping season, dropping something like 23.5 PPG, 8 RPG on a 50-40-90 shooting season and the Mavs are a really efficient offensive team behind Jose Calderon.

10. Durant wins the MVP due to voter fatigue, a slightly better record than the HEAT, and his “stepping up when Westbrook was gone”. Lebron deserves it by all stats, but Durant will get it.

11. Serge Ibaka wins Defensive Player of the Year, not just for the blocks, but some increased positional defense and time at center.

12. Rick Adelman wins Coach of the Year, even though we already knew he was great.

13. The Wizards are good, watchable, and give someone a scare in the first round.

14. The Cavs look good on paper, but overall crash due to injuries and ill fits. This team looks drastically different 12 months from now.

15. None of us will know what to do with Andre Drummond. He is a combination of young Shaq/Andries Biedrins/Javale McGee/Andre Blatche/DeMarcus Cousins. For those wondering if that is a compliment or insult….yes.

16. Sixth Man of the Year is a somewhat underwhelming race, but Reggie Jackson gets it because he gets a lot of counting stats while Westbrook is gone.

17. There will be multiple trades in the middle of the season, much more exciting than last year. These will heavily include the Blazers and Hawk among others, because the pieces for both those teams are just so tradable.

18. The Knicks kind of fall apart, and Melo definitively leaves. Next year they win 20 games behind a core of Felton/Iman/JR Smith/Bargnani/Tyson as four of those guys are really declining by then.

19. Asik is traded to the Pelicans as their season crashes due to problems at the swing and defense by Ryan Anderson. Anderson going to Houston makes the Rockets fun to watch and makes Harden excel. Asik lets Anthony Davis dominate at the 4.

20. Harden finishes out of the top 5 in real life MVP votes, but is the number 1 fantasy player with one of the more balanced efficiency/usage combinations in recent history. I am thinking a 24.5/5.5/8/45-40-88 with 2 steals, lower TOs, and a ton of FT makes at a scarce position.

Happy NBA Season everyone!

NFL 2013 Week 7 Predictions

Falcons -6.5 over Bucs, 20-12
-It’s not about Julio and Roddy. It’s about Glennon and Schiano.

Bengals +3.5 over Lions, 24-23
-Just a matchup thing. The Bengals do great against pass offenses.

Fins -7.5 over Bills, 24-13
-Tighter if it is Thad Lewis. A romp if it is Matt Flynn.
-Best Eliminator Pick

Pats -4 over Jets, 38-13
-I feel it coming. It is almost there!

Jags +7.5 over Chargers, 20-19
-Who is feeling a standard Norv Turner letdown? Wait, he got fired? That’s embarrassing. Um, who is feeling a feisty Jags team that is firing the ball downfield each play and is playing a West Coast team going East on a short week?!

Bears -1 over Ethnic Slurs, 27-17
-I’m literally unable to hold in my excitement about Brandon Marshall’s fantasy day. I am sitting here quivering and whooped aloud twice while typing this.

Packers -9.5 over Browns, 24-13
-Look up what happened last year when the Packers were without their two best WRs…yeah, Rodgers did just fine. He’s, as Nate Ravitz this week on the Fantasy Focus Football called him, Aaron Flippin’ Rodgers. Against Brandon Weeden. And THERE'S Norv Turner. He was hiding on me for a minute.

Chiefs -6.5 over Texans, 20-6
-Case Keenum anyone?
-Strategic Eliminator Pick

Colts +7.5 over Broncos, 31-30
-I just…I don’t….leave me alone. I love Andrew Luck. Jim Irsay tackles Manning on the field. Reggie Wayne catches 17 balls. Unicorns.

Vikings +3.5 over Giant¸23-14
-JASSSSSHHHHH FREEMANNNNN everyone!

NFL 2013 Week 2 Predictions

Chargers +8.5 over Eagles, 20-27
-That’s just a lot of points to cover.

Ravens -6.5 over Browns, 24-16
-Brandon Weeden involved? Brandon Weeden involved.
-Best Eliminator Pick

Texans -10 over Titans, 27-13
-Titans aren’t good. Jake Locker is quickly joining a group that needs to get together for drinks and enjoy their starts while they can. (Weeden, Locker, Ponder, Gabbert, and captain of the group, Josh Freeman).

Rams +6 over Falcons, 24-20
-Injuries man, injuries. The Rams are legit anyways. Daryl Richardson is a sneaky play this week. I am playing him over Gore in two leagues.

Pack -6.5 over Ethnic Slurs, 31-20
-Strongly under consideration for my Eliminator pick of the week. Based on what we saw last week, and the fact that there is zero chance Aaron Rodgers is letting them go 0-2, this should be an easy win for GB.

Cowboys +3.5 over Chiefs, 22-24
-The Cowboys lose painfully in the last minute, but it is good enough to cover.

Bears -6 over Vikings, 27-16
-The secret is out…the Vikings aren’t very good.

Saints -3.5 over Bucs, 34-17
-What games were everyone watching last week for this to be a 3.5 point line? The Saints beat a good Falcons team…and the Bucs got humiliated by the Jets. This could be a romp.

Lions -2 over Cards, 37-24
-I actually have respect for how well the Cards played last week, but I don’t know if that is repeatable, especially if Fitz is limited. The Lions on the other hand are this good, and could have scored 60 points last week if not for stupid issues and random events.
-Strategic Eliminator Pick

Raiders -6 - Jags +6, eww. That’s it, no pick, just an icky feeling. They should black this game out on ESPN’s scrolling bottom line.

Giants +4.5 over Broncos, 31-30
-Just a feeling.

Seahawks -3 over 49ers, 27-19
-More than a feeling.

Bengals -7 over Steelers, 31-10
-Emotionally invested. They are my AFC pick after all. Plus, you know, the Steelers are bad AND hurt.

2013 NFL Playoff Predictions and Awards

Playoff Picture:
NFC Seeds: 1. Packers, 2. Saints, 3. Seahawks, 4. Giants, 5. 49ers, 6. Lions
AFC Seeds: 1. Patriots, 2. Bengals, 3. Colts, 4. Chiefs, 5. Texans, 6. Ravens

Round 1: Seahawks over Lions, 49ers over Giants, Colts over Ravens, Texans over Chiefs
-Lions remain too one dimensional, Giants are flawed, Colts flip the script from last year, Alex Smith out Matt Schaubs Mat Schaub in the playoffs.

Round 2: Packers over 49ers, Saints over Seahawks, Pats over Texans, Bengals over Colts
-Packers figure out the running QB thing, Saints get the home seed and that makes the difference with Seattle in an amazing game, Pats continue to own theTexans, Bengals roll over Colts because no one can cover AJ Green.

Title Games: Packers over Saints, Bengals over Patriots
-The Packers-Saints game is always entertaining, but the Packers are better overall. The Bengals have a ton of talent at key spots and will out tough the Patriots.

Superbowl: Packers over Bengals
-Yeah, Andy Dalton isn’t beating Aaron Rodgers.

Awards
MVP: Tom Brady
-You win the MVP by overcoming odds, adversity, or exceeding expectations. Brady will do his normal thing with the team winning the normal amount of games, but people will fawn over this because of what has gone on with the team in the offseason.

OPY: Drew Brees
-I think 5500 yards and 50 TDs is in play. Brees has somehow never won the MVP and could be a good candidate for that as well.

DPY: Luke Kuechly
-Luke is going to rack up an insane amount of tackles. 175 tackles, 5 picks, 5 sacks, 15 pressures, 10 deflections is in range and would earn this award.

ORY: Eddie Lacy
-Based on pure opportunity.

DRY: Kenny Vaccaro
-The Saints are going to allow a lot of completions for Kenny to clean up.

COY: Pete Carroll
-I would love Sean Payton but there is no way the NFL would let that happen. The Seahawks will have a great group effort and Pete Carroll, somehow, walks away with COY.

NFL 2012 Week 9 Predictions

Top 5
1. Atlanta
2. Chicago
3. Houston
4. San Francisco
5. Green Bay

Bottom 5
28. Philadelphia
29. Cleveland
30. Oakland
31. Kansas City
32. Jacksonville

Packers -9.5 over Cards, 31-17
-Packers will just score too much. Man Cardinals, get a quarterback.

Ravens -3.5 over Browns, 20-13
-Ravens, despite injuries, are still just much better. Browns will play them tough though.

Texans -9.5 over Bills, 35-13
-Bills either win or lose big each week. So the probable result here is a Texans blowout, considering the disparity in talent levels between these two teams.
-Best Eliminator Pick

Bears -3.5 over Titans, 34-10
-Hey, there is my “going to be a close game until one team throws a pair of pick sixes” game! I was waiting to see where it would show up.
-2nd best eliminator game.

Bengals +4.5 over Broncos, 27-28
-Broncos win a late one, but 4.5 feels like a little too much. Dalton does just fine in this matchup of quarterbacks on totally different ends of the age spectrum.

Lions -4.5 over Jags, 27-16
-Lions are going to try something crazy and get a lead in this one and try to keep it. Gonna be a thing. Don’t always have to come from behind Lions, you know that right?

Colts +1.5 over Dolphins, 24-16
-Continue to love teams with quarterbacks versus teams without one. Luck to Wayne is big in this one as the Dolphins are good against the run and decidedly not against the pass. If Tannehill plays, it is more like a 3 point game.

Vikings +4.5 over Seahawks, 19-21
-Too many field goals + Seahawks home advantage leads to a Seattle win. But for a defensive game with the two most dynamic offensive players being on the Vikings, you can’t lay 4.5.

Giants -3.5 over Steelers, 27-10
-Nothing against the Steelers, simply a pick for the spirit of NY. The whole “flying in a few hours before the game from Pittsburgh” thing isn’t really good either. Eli has a big day.

Falcons -3.5 over Cowboys, 31-24
-It isn’t that the Cowboys cannot score enough points to hang with the Falcons. They totally can. It just seems like most of the time the Cowboys would get to 30+ points it would require a volume that presents the opportunity for Romo to throw 7 picks. I’ll take the nice, safe, consistent Falcons. A loss here essentially ends the Cowboys being a serious playoff team, as I said last week would happen. Sorry Dallas.

Saints -3 over Eagles, 31-25
-The Sproles injury troubles me, but I really think the Eagles are balancing on the edge of disaster. Vick could light this up. However, he has equal chance of being horrible right off the bat and then this could be over. You’ve been warned, either go with the Saints or just stay away. The over, on the other hand, is a nice time right now.
